Venoms of Micrurus coral snakes: Evolutionary trends in compositional patterns emerging from proteomic analyses
2016, ToxiconCitation Excerpt :For example, in the case of M. mipartitus venom from Colombia, its major lethal 3FTx (mipartoxin-I) was identified and sequenced (Rey-Suárez et al., 2011, 2012), providing a key target for the generation of neutralizing antibodies in coral snake antivenoms that would become clinically useful across its geographical distribution range. Similarly, key toxins present in Micrurus venoms from Brazilian and Mexican species have been characterized as potential targets for neutralization (Ho et al., 1995, 1997; de Oliveira et al., 2000; Moreira et al., 2010; da Silva et al., 2011; Carbajal-Saucedo et al., 2013). The current shortage and coverage limitations of coral snake antivenoms could be circumvented by establishing collaborative efforts among researchers from different laboratories in the affected countries of the Americas.

The former often act as α-neurotoxins, binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor to postsynaptically block transmission at the neuromuscular junction [49,50]. A postsynaptic effect has been demonstrated for the crude venoms in some coral snake species such as M. lemniscatus [51], Micrurus pyrrhocryptus [52], M. mipartitus [53], and Micrurus dissoleucus [53].

RP-HPLC fractions that share some characteristics, including retention time and molecular weight of alpha-neurotoxins found in different Micrurus [6,13,46], were evaluated by electrophysiology as described in methods. Partial and reversible responses were observed with fractions C, D, FG, and H at 1 μM.
