A hypothesis: Retrotransposons as a relay of epigenetic marks in intergenerational epigenetic inheritance
2022, GeneCitation Excerpt :On the other hand, similar to LTR retrotransposons, these non-LTR retrotransposons could act as alternative promoters for nearby genes. For example, an active antisense promoter of LINE-1 was found to interfere with more than 40 human protein-coding genes (Speek, 2001; Matlik et al., 2006; Nigumann et al., 2002; Faulkner et al., 2009). Recent studies have shown that most transcripts of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) originate from a nearby LINE-1 antisense promoter (Denli et al., 2015).
Identification and characterization of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their transposable element origins in the saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus
2020, Analytical BiochemistryCitation Excerpt :Such activity can result in the modification of gene expression through multiple processes including disruption of coding and non-coding regions, promotion of non-homologous recombination, exaptation, and epigenetic regulation. All of these processes could impact the evolution of diversity, both taxonomic and genomic [23–31]. TEs are broadly classified into two classes, Class I retrotransposons and Class II DNA transposons [32].
