2020, General and Comparative EndocrinologySpeeding in the slow lane: Phylogenetic comparative analyses reveal that not all human life history traits are exceptional
2019, Journal of Human EvolutionCitation Excerpt :If the Brownian motion model is selected, we employ another phylogenetic comparative method, which tests whether a species is an ‘evolutionary outlier’ by predicting its trait value based on body mass or litter mass, phylogenetic signal, and expected trait covariation with related species. We used the primate life history data set from Kappeler and Pereira (2003), which was compiled from Smith and Jungers (1997), Smith and Leigh (1998), Godfrey et al. (2001), Lee and Kappeler (2003), and Ross (2003). Variables extracted from the dataset include body mass (in grams, female values when available), inter-birth interval (in months), age at first reproduction (in years), gestation length (in days), birth mass (in grams), and litter mass (in grams).
Primary bone microanatomy records developmental aspects of life history in catarrhine primates
2016, Journal of Human EvolutionUnderstanding the comparative catarrhine context of human pelvic form: A 3D geometric morphometric analysis
2013, Journal of Human EvolutionCitation Excerpt :There is some empirical support for this prediction in haplorrhine taxa (e.g., Leutenegger, 1978; Leutenegger and Cheverud, 1982; Plavcan and Van Schaik, 1997; Smith and Cheverud, 2002) although it does not appear to be the case intraspecifically for the modern human pelvis (Kurki, 2011). Smith and Leigh (1998) also show that sexual dimorphism in primate neonate body mass is positively correlated with adult sexual dimorphism, which in turn is correlated with absolute body size (i.e., Rensch's Rule [Abouheif and Fairbairn, 1997]). However, general increases in body size are also evolutionarily related to a variety of ecological factors such as relative terrestriality, feeding ecology, locomotor biomechanics, as well as phylogenetic constraints (Fleagle, 1999).
