Postnatal development of the distribution of nitric oxide-producing neurons in the rat corpus callosum
2020, Neuroscience ResearchCitation Excerpt :Further work is required to elucidate the actual role played by NO in axonal pathfinding in the cc and its relationships with the guidance molecules secreted by midline structures like the IG, the glial wedge, the glial sling, and the midline zipper, all of which are involved in callosal axon guidance (Nishikimi et al., 2013). Intracallosal NADPH-d+Ns could also play an important role in the first postnatal month during callosal fiber myelination (Seggie and Berry, 1972), since NO stimulates oligodendrocyte growth and differentiation during development (Garthwaite et al., 2015). The important role of NO in cc myelination processes is also demonstrated by other studies; for instance, nNOS-deficient mice show delayed remyelination after chemical demyelination (Liñares et al., 2006), and rat pups inhaling NO-enriched air during the first postnatal week show increased myelination of cc axons (Olivier et al., 2010).
The distribution of pain activity across the human neonatal brain is sex dependent
2018, NeuroImageCitation Excerpt :As the nERP is maximal at the vertex by term age in most neonates, the apparent developmental trajectory of this response could reflect the development of structural and functional inter-hemispheric connections that mature from 35 weeks to term (Allievi et al., 2016; Doria et al., 2010; Kostović and Judaš, 2010; Smyser et al., 2010; Volpe, 2009; for a review, see Verriotis et al., 2016a). Indeed, the corpus callosum develops within this period and postnatally, facilitating the development of interhemispheric communication (Hüppi et al., 1998; Malinger and Zakut, 1993; Seggie and Berry, 1972). Alternatively, the maturation of the peak N3P3 at the vertex may reflect the developmental refinement of somatotopic organisation in the SI cortex, as the region representing the foot (the site of noxious stimulation in our study), is located at the top of the postcentral gyrus within the medial longitudinal fissure (Akselrod et al., 2017).

2011, International Journal of PsychophysiologyCitation Excerpt :The CC displays a significant variety in terms of myelination (Aboitiz, 1992). In rats, the fraction of myelinated fibres is zero at birth, then it gradually increases to 53% at 300 days post-conception (Seggie and Berry, 1972). Similarly in humans, none of the callosal fibres are myelinated at birth, and in adults 30% of the fibres remain unmyelinated.
