Abstract

Montreal is a multi-ethnic community in which the majority are French Canadians who have maintained a distinctive culture. The others are mainly of non-French European stock. We have analyzed cases of juvenile-onset diabetes occurring in this community from 1971 to 1978 so as to compare incidence rates between these two ethnic groups and between socio-economic classes. Incidence was lower among French Canadians and in the lower income groups; these effects were independent of each other. The socio-economic differences suggest an environmental risk factor whereas the ethnic differences may be due to genetic or environmental factors.
