Artificial expansion of the abdomen of the milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus, by saline injection during the final larval instar caused premature metamorphosis (Nijhout, 1979). During normal growth conditions, these stretch receptor neurons are only activated once the animal reaches an appropriate critical size.
