2020, Nitric Oxide - Biology and ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Notably, exposure of rat aortic rings to β-alanine did not affect vascular reactivity, suggesting that there is no direct effect of β-alanine on vascular cells [48]. β-Alanine is a structural analogue of taurine and competitively inhibit taurine uptake by Tau-T, increasing taurine urinary excretion and reducing taurine tissue levels [49]. Tau-T deficient mice (taut−/-) present 98% reduction in taurine levels in heart [50] and exhibited abnormal cardiac function, cardiomyocyte atrophy, mitochondrial and myofiber damage, reduced sarcoplasmic reticular Ca2+ ATPase activity, and increased susceptibility to aging-dependent cardiac fibrosis [51–53].
