Learning from errors: Exploration of the monitoring learning effect
2022, CognitionCitation Excerpt :It is a common view among educators and some psychologists that errors are self-reinforcing and self-defeating, so whenever possible, learning experiences should be structured to promote the correct response while minimizing errors. This notion emerged from early studies in animal learning (Terrace, 1963), and was reinforced by neuropsychological evidence that individuals with amnesic syndromes learn better with error-minimizing techniques (Baddeley & Wilson, 1994; Wilson, Baddeley, Evans, & Shiel, 1994). Moreover, the Hebbian learning principle (Hebb, 1949), informally summarized as “neurons that fire together, wire together,” offers a plausible mechanism for how producing an error in response to a stimulus might stamp in that stimulus-error pairing.
