Abstract

The enantio- and diastereoselective biotransformation of (+)-, (−)- and (±)-trans-carveol and cis-carveol by Euglena gracilis Z cultured photoheterotrophically has been investigated. Though (−)-cis- and (+)-trans-carveols were not transformed at all, both (−)-trans- and (+)-cis-carveols were dehydrogenated to the corresponding carvones, which were further transformed via dihydrocarvones to dihydrocarveols. Furthermore, enantio- and diastereoselectivity in the biotransformation of (±)-trans- and (+)-cis-carveols and the mixture of diastereomers were observed.

  • Using algae cells to drive cofactor regeneration and asymmetric reduction for the synthesis of chiral chemicals

    Citation Excerpt :

To improve the catalytic activity of algae cells, researchers attempted to optimize their culture medium and methods. Proven ways of altering the catalytic activity and configuration of products include adding metal ions to the culture medium [24], changing the carbon or nitrogen source [34], changing the culture conditions (e.g., the intensity wavelength of illumination, ventilation condition, etc.) [29,30,41–43]. Yoshizako et al. used C. pyrenoidosa to restore 3‑oxo‑valerate and found that the type and concentration of metal ions in the medium affected the asymmetric reduction reaction (Table 2) [24].
