In sleep, mammals including humans can perceive light through closed eyelids [71,72]; at least some species can demonstrably do so in rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, a finding that prompted the speculation, over 30 years ago, that one task of REMs proper was to optimize sensitivity to changing luminance for seasonal purposes [73]. Insofar as powerfully innervated both by direct retinal afferents transmitting luminance (see above) and by SCN afferents transmitting circadian phase position [74], the DMN seems especially well placed to register the autumnal mismatch between these two signals at its peak of saliency.
