Mesenchymal lesions of the breast
2019, Diagnostic HistopathologyCitation Excerpt :Leiomyomas form slowly growing masses and are usually superficial and found near the nipple (Figure 10) although can be located more deeply. Superficial tumours probably derive from the smooth muscle of the nipple whilst those found more deeply may derive from myofibroblasts, myoepithelium, blood vessels or mesenchymal precursor cells.42 Microscopically, leiomyomas are circumscribed proliferations composed of bland spindle cells with cigar shaped nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm which form short, tightly interlacing fascicles.

2017, Seminars in Diagnostic PathologyCitation Excerpt :Most are superficial and near the nipple, but deep parenchymal tumors have been reported.34–44,107,108 Whereas superficial tumors likely derive from smooth muscle of the nipple, the origin of parenchymal leiomyomas is not clear, with possibilities including mesenchymal progenitor cells, blood vessels, myofibroblasts, and myoepithelium.35,44 Most present as palpable nodules without specific imaging features.35–37,40
