A 2.7 kDa protein (23 aa) referred to as SV40 early leader protein is encoded by the early region of SV40 (Khalili et al., 1987). An ORF encoding an early leader peptide of respectively 39 and 38 residues is conserved in the BKPyV and JCPyV genomes.
