The action of misexpressed egl-5/Abd-B to convert ALM neurons both morphologically and transcriptionally toward the PLM identity demonstrates posterior dominance (Bachiller et al., 1994; González-Reyes and Morata, 1990) in the specification of terminal neuronal subtypes as had also been found in the specification of peptidergic neurons in Drosophila (Suska et al., 2011). Although the anterior Hox gene ceh-13 is not required for TRN morphology cell autonomously, it does contribute to the commitment to TRN fate in ALM neurons (Figure S1A), as egl-5 facilitates TRN fate adoption in PLM neurons (Zheng et al., 2015).

Shared phenotypes include fused segments with fewer limbs in the thorax, ectopic limbs on the head, a deformed head, and abdominal defects (Gonzalez-Reyes and Morata, 1990; Lamka et al., 1992; Vachon et al., 1992). Distinct phenotypes include the expression of the limb selector gene Dll in the presence of ectopic Ubx in the thorax and abdomen, albeit at reduced levels in some limbs.
