2023, International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesNetrins and Netrin Receptors are Essential for Normal Targeting of Sensory Axons in the Zebrafish Olfactory Bulb
2023, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :The developing olfactory system provides a good illustration of this principle. The initial wiring of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) to the olfactory bulb (OB) converts a diffuse pattern of OSN stimulation into a spatially organized topographic map of activity that is unique for each odor (Astic et al., 1987; Ngai et al., 1993; Vassar et al., 1994; Kermen et al., 2016). OSNs are born and differentiate in the olfactory epithelium and project axons to the olfactory bulb.

2015, Progress in Molecular Biology and Translational ScienceCitation Excerpt :The first receptor proteins responsible for the detection of odors in an animal were identified in the rat in 1991,27 a discovery recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2004.28 Subsequently, a wide range of other vertebrate ORs have been identified in various species including humans,29 fish,30 and birds,31 revealing strong conservation across the chordates.32 Homology-based strategies were conducted in insects by many researchers at that time to identify candidate insect ORs, but remained unsuccessful.
Determinants of the Drosophila Odorant Receptor Pattern
2012, Developmental CellCitation Excerpt :Despite the catalog of mechanisms known to determine cell fate, how an olfactory receptor neuron (ORN) chooses to express a particular odorant receptor (Or) gene remains unclear. In most olfactory systems studied to date, neurons that express the same Or family member are scattered across sensory epithelia, interspersed with neurons that express different Or genes (Ressler et al., 1993; Vassar et al., 1993; Vosshall et al., 1999; Ngai et al., 1993). These patterns are similar but not identical between individuals and might be explained by stochastic mechanisms whereby distant neurons independently select an Or gene from a regionally restricted palette (reviewed in Fuss and Ray, 2009).
