Ethnic and gender differences regarding the insulin-blood pressure relationship
2009, Diabetes Research and Clinical PracticeCitation Excerpt :The decline in circulating insulin and C-peptide levels might be linked to progressive β-cell failure [43]. Joffe et al. [44] proposed that the African population either inherit or acquire decreased pancreatic β-cell mass [44] and that they are more prone to the development of insulinopenic non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Another possible explanation is a diminished sensitivity to incretin hormones due to impairments in secretion and action of glucagon-like-peptide 1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide [45].
Diabetes in African Americans

2006, Clinical Diabetes: Translating Research into PracticeDiabetes in sub-Saharan Africa
2010, The LancetCitation Excerpt :Long-term studies to examine the effect of antiretroviral treatment on the rising burden of diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa are needed. Both insulin secretion deficiency (β-cell dysfunction) and insulin resistance are seen in African people with type 2 diabetes.105,106 In offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes from Cameroon, reduced insulin secretion was noted before onset of diabetes, suggesting that this variable could be a major metabolic predictor of progression to diabetes.107
