Cholinergic striatal neurons are increased in HSAN V homozygous mice despite reduced NGF bioavailability
2019, Biochemical and Biophysical Research CommunicationsCitation Excerpt :NGF haploinsufficiency is therefore the most likely explanation for the HSAN V mutation lethal phenotype. NGF plays an essential role in the mature nervous system, by regulating the function of forebrain cholinergic neurons [16] via TrkA and p75NTR signalling [ 17]. Also cholinergic neurons in the striatum have TrkA receptors and depend on NGF [ 18].
Hippocampal dysfunctions caused by cranial irradiation: A review of the experimental evidence
2015, Brain, Behavior, and ImmunityCitation Excerpt :Neurotrophic factors play a critical role in neuronal functions, including synaptic activity and plasticity of mature neurons as well as proliferation, differentiation and survival of neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) (Barde, 1994; McAllister, 2001). Among them, nerve growth factor (NGF) was first recognized for its role in the development and maintenance of cholinergic neurons with the response to NGF action declining throughout life (Rylett and Williams, 1994). Additionally, BDNF and GDNF, which are abundant in the mouse hippocampus, have received increasing attention as modulators of neuronal survival, proliferation, and differentiation in the CNS (Airaksinen and Saarma, 2002; Lipsky and Marini, 2007; Nielsen et al., 2009).
