The addition of deferoxamine, a Fe chelator, to amastigotes, or their culture in transferrin-free serum, arrests proliferation in vitro, indicating the Fe requirement (Lima and Villalta, 1990). Moreover, amastigotes can take up human transferrin by the endocytic pathway when these forms present transferrin receptors on flagellar pockets (Rocha et al., 2010).
