Abstract

Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is triggered in immature thymocytes and T-cell hybridomas by signalling via the CD3-T-cell receptor pathway. In this paper, Dieter Kabelitz and colleagues catalogue the recently accumulating evidence that apaptosis can also be initiated in mature peripheral T cells this may constitute an important aspect of cellular immune regulation.

To maintain homeostasis after clonal expansion, activated T cells must be removed to avoid provoking autoimmune diseases.1 Apoptotic death of T cells in response to a repeated or excessive T-cell receptor (TCR) triggering is referred to as activation-induced cell death (AICD).2,3 Extensive studies have been done to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of AICD in T helper (Th)1 and Th2 subsets.4,5

  • TIPE2, a Negative Regulator of Innate and Adaptive Immunity that Maintains Immune Homeostasis

    2008, Cell
    Citation Excerpt :

Both pathways of apoptosis are crucial for immune homeostasis and the normal functioning of the immune system. However, AICD of T cells, as tested in this study, relies primarily on the extrinsic pathway in which Fas plays an essential role (Kabelitz et al., 1993). Results reported here establish that TIPE2 is involved in regulating both apoptosis and activation of T lymphocytes.
