The emergence of adaptive diversification from plant's light competition
2021, Chaos, Solitons and FractalsCitation Excerpt :The evolutionary tree is a result of repeated EBs which are closely related to the theory of adaptive radiation. Adaptive radiation is traditionally defined as the diversification of a lineage into several species that exploit different resource types and that differ in morphological or physiological traits in exploiting those resources, it involves both the formation of species and the evolution of ecological traits [81–83]. It has been assumed that divergent natural selection is the ultimate cause of adaptive radiation, and that three distinct ecological processes are involved: (i) the phenotypic differentiation of species caused by the differences in resource environment; (ii) the phenotypic differentiation through resource competition (i.e., the divergent character displacement); (iii) the evolution of reproductive isolation of species as a consequence of divergent natural selection and resource competition (i.e., ecological speciation) [84].

Morphological variation, which facilitates resource partitioning among species and/or the enhancement of reproductive isolation, provides an indirect evidence for character displacement (Brown and Wilson, 1956; Schluter and McPhail, 1993; Pfennig and Murphy, 2000). This study described genetic, morphological, and ecological patterns, presenting how two possible alternative scenarios may have varying roles throughout the course of an evolutionary process at different evolutionary phases.
