Clonal evidence for the progression of a testicular germ cell tumor to angiosarcoma
2010, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :Mediastinal tumors have specifically shown a worse prognosis, presumably because of their relatively larger size and frequent invasion into other organs at the time of resection, often resulting in positive surgical margins [14]. The overall prognosis of primary angiosarcoma not related to GCT is poor, with a mean survival of 24 months and a 5-year survival of 10% to 24% for superficial and up to 53% 1 year mortality for deep seated angiosarcomas [16-18]. The pathogenesis of angiosarcomas in patients with GCTs is difficult to ascertain on the basis of the limited number of reports; however, it can be inferred that these tumors may arise as a result of dedifferentiation of a teratoma component, possibly with radiation and/or chemotherapy as contributing factor.
