Modulation of the immune system by melatonin; implications for cancer therapy
2022, International ImmunopharmacologyCitation Excerpt :However, a reduction of lymphocyte numbers following chemo/radiation therapy may reduce this immunogenic effect of cancer therapy. melatonin alone also has been shown to enhance antigen presentation and activation and maturation of CD8+ T lymphocytes [77]. A combination of melatonin and chemo/radiation therapy may enhance anti-tumour immunity via protection of lymphocytes against apoptosis and also a synergic enhancement of antigen presentation and maturation of DCs [68].
Effects of melatonin receptor expression on prognosis and survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients
2022, International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Moreover, molecular cloning studies of the human G protein-coupled receptor family have identified two distinct classes of high-affinity (20–200 pM) plasma membrane-localized melatonin receptors, referred to as MTNR1A and MTNR1B28–31. Melatonin receptors are expressed on the surface of T lymphocytes and monocytes and increase immunity by activating cytokine production, while also suppressing tumour angiogenesis, cancer cell proliferation, and metastasis15,19,32–35. The binding of melatonin receptors to ligands reduces the intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels by suppressing adenylate cyclase activity, thereby regulating the activities of protein kinase C, protein kinase A, and mitogen-activated protein kinases17,36–38.
