Abstract

This article reviews and synthesizes the literature on family variables and interaction processes associated with child and adolescent depression. The review focuses on two principal streams of literature: families of depressed children and children of depressed parents. In regard to the families of depressed children, specific attention is paid to familial psychopathology, demographic factors, negative life events, and family environment. The section on children of depressed parents addresses genetic contributions, maternal and paternal depression, and children's resilience in the face of parental depression. This is followed by a brief review of the literature on the influence of sibling relationships in the manifestation of childhood depression. The article concludes with a discussion of the interaction between family environment and childhood depression.

Several studies have found increased critical and controlling parenting among parents of depressed youth (e.g., Asarnow et al., 1994; McLeod et al., 2007; Rapee, 1997; Sheeber and Sorensen, 1998), and others have noted increased emotional withdrawal and decreased support (Kashani et al., 1995; Pineda et al., 2007; Sheeber and Sorensen, 1998), however these relationships have been observed using measures of general parenting rather than measures specifically assessing parent responses to depression. Parental criticism and rejection can undermine self-esteem and trigger negative schemas that act as precursors to depression, while parental control can reduce the adolescent's experience of mastery and increase helplessness (Kaslow et al., 1994; McLeod et al., 2007). Critical and controlling parental responses may reflect parental attempts to change undesirable behaviours in their child, but are likely to be unhelpful and ineffective when these behaviours reflect symptoms of a clinical disorder (Asarnow et al., 1994).

    • Examining the association between parenting and childhood depression among Chinese children and adolescents: A systematic literature review

2018, Children and Youth Services Review
      Citation Excerpt :

Six studies (15.8%) did not provide any description on how the parenting construct was operationalized. Parenting styles and practices have long been hypothesized to play an important role in influencing the development and prevalence of childhood depression (Kaslow, Deering, & Racusin, 1994). The main objective of this review was to synthesize and assess peer-reviewed articles based on the association of parenting and childhood depression among Chinese children and adolescents.

    • Is maternal depression related to mother and adolescent reports of family functioning?

      2018, Journal of Adolescence
      Citation Excerpt :

In addition, family cohesion, reported by both adolescents and their mothers, decreased as maternal depressive symptoms increased. This finding is consistent with the tenet that depressed mothers tend to have more negative and problematic interactions with their children, which affects the mother-adolescent relationship (Cummings & Davies, 1994; Goodman & Gotlib, 1999; Kaslow et al., 1994; Van Loon et al., 2014; Yeh et al., 2016). However, in the present study, family adaptability was not related to maternal depressive symptoms.
