2020, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: BiologyCitation Excerpt :Overall, our findings indicate that PBL from printed micro-LED substrates offer superior antibacterial effect compared to traditional CW LED devices, with the added advantage that the micro-LEDs are thin, flexible, portable, relatively inexpensive and even disposable; and has exceptional antimicrobial results when used in the pulsed mode. The superiority of each generation of printed LED used in this study is evident from our results, which consistently showed significantly better bacterial suppression at relatively ultralow irradiances and radiant energies compared with the irradiances and radiant exposures that are 20 times higher in previously published reports [1,17–31]. Whereas irradiances as low as 2, 3.5, 4.5 and 5 mW/cm2, i.e. 40 to 100 times less irradiance than reported in previous publications [17–22,24–27], yielded as much as 100% bacterial suppression depending on the protocol, it took as much as 100 mW/cm2 to achieve similar results in previous studies [22,24].

Similarly, P. acnes, though relatively slow-growing and rarely life-threatening, is so ubiquitous that it engenders acne vulgaris in the course of the lifetime of 80% of the world's population [25]. Further, infection with P. acnes represents >30% of dermatologic consultations each year [26,27] and drug resistant strains of P. acnes have been on the rise [28].
