Zebrafish and medaka as models for biomedical research of bone diseases
2020, Developmental BiologyCitation Excerpt :The metabolism of magnesium is analogous to that of calcium for both fish and terrestrial vertebrates. Absorption occurs in the intestine, while excretion is carried out via the kidneys (Ferment and Touitou, 1985). In fish in addition, it has been shown that the gills can be used to absorb magnesium from water in cases where fish are exposed to a low magnesium diet (Bijvelds et al., 1996, 1998; Dabrowska et al., 1991).
Post-prandial changes in plasma mineral levels in rainbow trout fed a complete plant ingredient based diet and the effect of supplemental di-calcium phosphate
2014, AquacultureCitation Excerpt :However, existence of a diffusive and saturable component for P transport in intestine of rainbow trout as reported by Avila et al. (2000) possibly explains this pattern. Analogies between gastro-intestinal absorption of Ca and Mg have been reported in higher vertebrates (Ferment and Touitou, 1985) as well as in rainbow trout (Bucking and Wood, 2007, 2009). Bucking and Wood (2006, 2007) showed that the ionic concentration of Ca and Mg in the chyme and plasma of rainbow trout (10–13 °C) attains a peak 8 h post-meal in the plasma.
