Neuronal activity and NIBS in developmental myelination and remyelination – Current state of knowledge
2023, Progress in NeurobiologyThe bright and the dark side of myelin plasticity: Neuron-glial interactions in health and disease
2021, Seminars in Cell and Developmental BiologyCitation Excerpt :These studies have shown that when vesicular release of glutamate from axons is reduced (by knocking out VGlut2 in retinal ganglion cell axons) or when the AMPAR subunits GluR2, 3, and 4 (GluR1 is not expressed) or the NMDAR subunits GluN1 or GluN3 are knocked out in OPCs, there is little to no effect on OPC proliferation or myelination [39–42,96]. A potential explanation for these apparently conflicting findings, whether neuronal activity regulates myelination [21,30,43–49] or not [33–35,50–53], is that perhaps there are two distinct modes of myelination, one that is independent of neuronal activity and another that depends on activity-regulated signaling to OPCs [30]. In fact, different neuronal subtypes in the same brain regions, are either myelinated independent of activity or must be active to become myelinated [43,54].
Building a (w)rapport between neurons and oligodendroglia: Reciprocal interactions underlying adaptive myelination
2021, NeuronCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, studies manipulating experiential input demonstrate physiologically relevant changes in oligodendrocyte lineage progression and/or myelin. For example, paradigms involving enrichment or deprivation of sensory or social input, such as social isolation, whisker stimulation, or monocular visual deprivation, have been shown to variously alter proliferation, differentiation, survival, and/or myelination by oligodendrocyte lineage cells (Bacmeister et al., 2020; Etxeberria et al., 2016; Fukui et al., 1991; Gyllensten and Malmfors, 1963; Hughes et al., 2018; Kato et al., 2020; Liu et al., 2012; Makinodan et al., 2012; Osanai et al., 2018; Sinclair et al., 2017; Swire et al., 2019; Tauber et al., 1980; Yang et al., 2013, 2020; Zhao et al., 2011). The importance of experience-dependent myelination is particularly evidenced by studies showing that increased oligodendrogenesis evoked by motor, spatial, and fear-conditioning learning paradigms is necessary for proper learning and memory (McKenzie et al., 2014; Pan et al., 2020; Steadman et al., 2020; Wang et al., 2020; Xiao et al., 2016; Xin and Chan, 2020; Zheng et al., 2019; Zhou et al., 2020).
Myelination of regenerating optic nerve axons occurs in conjunction with an increase of the oligodendrocyte precursor cell population in the adult mice
2021, Brain Research BulletinCitation Excerpt :Upon AMPA receptor activation, OPCs proliferates and differentiates into oligodendrocytes (Gallo et al., 1996; Gudz et al., 2006). Corroborating this notion, it has long been shown that modulating light exposure by dark rearing or precociously opening eyes, respectively delays and advances optic nerve myelination (Gyllensten and Malmfors, 1963; Tauber et al., 1980). If regenerating RGC axons forms synapses with OPCs during optic nerve regeneration remains to be investigated.
