Behavioral, but not physiological, adaptation to repeated separation in mother and infant primates

Abstract

Mother and infant squirrel monkeys were subjected to a series of brief separations in order to evaluate how behavioral and physiological responses change following multiple exposures to stress. Beginning when the infants reached three months of age, their behavioral and hormonal responses were assessed during six 1-hr separations; an additional five dyads served as controls for the effect of repeated disturbance. The separated infants showed a marked and progressive decrease in distress calling across time, but no change was observed in the high levels of agitated activity or the plasma cortisol response to separation. This finding questions the traditional use of distress vocalizations as a measure of stress and indicates that certain types of behavior can change independently of physiological arousal responses, which may continue to occur even after repeated exposures to stress.

      Rhesus monkeys, in particular, have been a species widely used to study the impact of social environment because they experience complex social relationships and form strong social alliances and bonds (Hinde and Spencer-Booth, 1967; Suomi, 2005), beginning with the strong and enduring mother-infant bond, similar to that seen in humans (Bowlby, 1969; Hinde, 1974). The mother provides nourishment, protection, and social lessons while also regulating the infant's fear and stress responses (Coe et al., 1983; Gunnar et al., 2015; Hennessy, 1986; Hinde and McGinnis, 1977; Sanchez et al., 2001; Sanchez et al., 2015).       In natural and semi-natural conditions squirrel monkey mothers and other group members intermittently leave newly weaned offspring beginning at 3–6 months of age to forage for food on their own (Boinski & Fragaszy, 1989; Lyons et al., 1998). Initially, brief intermittent separations studied in controlled experimental conditions elicit distress peep-calls and increase plasma levels of the stress hormone cortisol with partial habituation of these measures observed over repeated separations (Coe et al., 1983; Hennessy, 1986). Later in life, squirrel monkeys exposed to intermittent separations show fewer behavioral indications of anxiety, diminished stress levels of cortisol, and enhanced sensitivity to glucocorticoid feedback regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis compared to squirrel monkeys not exposed to prior separations (Lyons et al., 2009; Lyons et al., 2010).
