Analysis of the Stockholm trials revealed that adverse effects of radiotherapy were increased with higher radiation dose and larger volume of normal tissue within the irradiated volume.12 Indeed, with a two-beam technique compared to a three- or four-beam technique with the superior border at mid L4, the volume of the bowel that receives >95% of the prescription dose and is included in the treatment volume is more than twice as large.
