Furthermore, in small joints like that of neonates, it can be difficult to visualize and reach the entire joint through arthrotomy.

Wireless and battery-free sensing systems in combination with advanced electrode technology can overcome many of the challenges and have been widely investigated for use in electrophysiological monitoring (Besnoff et al., 2013; Chung et al., 2019; Jeong et al., 2019; Mandal et al., 2010; Zulqarnain et al., 2020).

In one study, 4% of NICU survivors were shown to develop functionally or cosmetically significant scarring as a result of extravasation (Cartlidge et al., 1990). Elevation of the affected limb is a critical aspect of the initial management but can be difficult to maintain in neonates.
