      However, although inhibition of c-kit tyrosine kinase receptors activation and downstream signaling by imatinib has been shown to inhibit efficiently the proliferation of MCs and to induce their apoptosis (Akin et al., 2003), the involvement of other tyrosine kinase receptors than c-kit (Sandler et al., 2006) cannot be ruled out in the present experimental condition. In further studies, we observed that BmV significantly degranulated mast cells in vivo and induced a substantial release of PGD2, a marker of MC activation (Ito et al., 1989; Kanaoka and Urade, 2003), reinforcing that local MCs play a role for the oedematogenic property of B. moojeni venom. Moreover, these findings suggest that in addition to the ability to degranulate MCs, BmV can stimulate the neo-synthesis of inflammatory mediators by these cells.

      The final step is facilitated by free thiols, activated by Tyr-107; however, this does not appear to be necessary for productive catalysis. PGD2 is a structural isomer of PGE2, and early studies of D-series PGs regarded them as side-products of E-series biosynthesis (44). Whereas the prostane ring on PGE2 has a 9-keto and 11-hydroxy moiety, the positions of these substituents are reversed on PGD2.
