  • Carrying human infants – An evolutionary heritage

    2020, Infant Behavior and Development
    Citation Excerpt :

The difference lies in the type of hair. The reminiscent, fine, unpigmented, unsheathed, and miniscule hair is called vellus hair (Rantala, 1999), as opposed to terminal hair, which is stronger, longer, and pigmented. Based on DNA analysis, humans lost their fur (or more precisely changed the hair type) at the absolute latest 1.2 Mya, but possibly before that time (Rogers, Iltis, & Wooding, 2004).

  • Why do humans get acne? A hypothesis

    2020, Medical Hypotheses
    Citation Excerpt :

Since all other primates have considerable hair covering, it has always been accepted that our primate ancestors also had thick body hair and that at some point humans “lost their thick terminal hairs”. Human ’nakedness’ has been attributed to a range of different factors such as sexual selection or an adaption against ectoparasites such as fleas, ticks or lice [40]. It has also been suggested that thermoregulation may have been important in the reduction of hair in hominin evolution.
