Although congenital cardiac disease dictates the course and prognosis of patients with the congenital asplenia syndrome, structural abnormalities in extracardiac systems may further complicate the clinical picture. A study of 29 necropsied asplenic patients was undertaken to ascertain the type and incidence of these anomalies. Significant gastrointestinal and genitourinary abnormalities were found in approximately 25 per cent of these patients, and serious central nervous system, bronchopulmonary, and skeletal anomalies were found in 5 to 10 per cent.
