Historically, there have been concerns about premature infants being vulnerable to hypothyroidism from iodine excess because of the widespread use of iodinated skin cleansers, such as povidone-iodine in NICUs.20-23 However, a decrease in the use of these cleansers in recent years in Iran and elsewhere24-26 can be a potential factor for the negative iodine balance in this vulnerable group.

Incidentally, numerous case studies have shown that there are no detrimental effects from the perioperative application of PVP-I based antiseptics [23–25]. PVP-I is commercially formulated as disinfectant scrubs, gels, ointments, solutions and swabs, yet there are few examples of its adaptation for use in an effective surface coating [8].
