People may be misinformed about the health risks related to waterpipe smoking due to a false belief that the water filters out carcinogens contained in the smoke (Kandela, 2000). One study found that high school students in San Diego County, California believed that waterpipe tobacco was the least harmful of all the tobacco products (Smith et al., 2011).
