  • Estrogenic mediation of serotonergic and neurotrophic systems: Implications for female mood disorders

2014, Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry
    Citation Excerpt :

Estradiol has demonstrated some success as both a preventative measure and as a treatment for women with postpartum depression. Studies testing transdermal and sublingual estradiol treatment have reported a decrease in depressive symptoms in women with this disorder (Ahokas et al., 1998; Gregoire et al., 1996), and in a small group of women with a history of postpartum depression, treatment with oral estradiol prevented the recurrence of depressive symptoms (Sichel et al., 1995). Due to the small sample size of two of these studies, additional research into the efficacy of estradiol as a treatment for postpartum depression is warranted.
