  • The time window of pet ownership exposure modifies the relationship of Environmental Tobacco Smoke with lung function: A large population-based cohort study

    2020, Environmental Research
    Citation Excerpt :

As two major indoor pollution sources, Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and household dander-producing pets are problems of increasing global concern to the public (Collins et al., 2018; Kaplan et al., 2019). It is estimated that 180 million Chinese children have been exposed to ETS (Liu and Chen, 2011) and there has been a 52.2% increase in pet ownership since 2009 in China (Xu et al., 2017; Xie et al., 2017). For exposure to ETS, evidence of biochemical changes have been found by many studies including but not limited to mitochondrial damage in cardiovascular tissues, a decrease in total antioxidative response and impairment of endothelial dependent arterial dilation (Anthérieu et al., 2017; Aridgides et al., 2019; Kaisar et al., 2018; Pesonen and Vähäkangas, 2019; Rodriguez-Portelles and Rodriguez Leyva, 2019; Zinflou and Rochette, 2019; Wiest et al., 2017).
