Abstract

In nine patients with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina, plasma, urinary, cerebrospinal-fluid, and aqueous-humour ornithine concentrations were ten to twenty times higher than in controls. The nine patients came from seven families. It is suggested that the basic metabolic abnormality in patients with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is decreased activity of the enzyme ornithine-ketoacid aminotransferase.
