Some authors have reported transmission of S. aureus between humans and domestic animals in the same household (Cefai et al., 1994; Gómez-Sanz et al., 2013; van Duijkeren et al., 2004), which was also observed in the present study for the owners and their dog that were sampled at VCs. Even without investigating all family members (which may be a limitation of this study), it was possible to verify for the first time the genetic similarity between the Dog-OS-MRSA and the MSSA from its owner.

Originally found almost exclusively in humans, MRSA is increasingly being identified in affected and healthy dogs (i.e., unapparent carriers) [1,2]. Dogs that are household pets are in close contact with their owners, and this contact may result in the transmission of bacteria, including MRSA, particularly from the muzzle site of the dogs due to, for instance, licking and smelling [3].
