Platelet counts affect the prognostic value of homocysteine in acute ischemic stroke patients
2019, AtherosclerosisCitation Excerpt :The present study highlights the modification role of PLT count on the effect of HCY levels on prognosis after ischemic stroke. Previous studies reported that elevated HCY levels were associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the general population and patients with cardiovascular diseases [24–26]. Recently, homocysteine-lowering vitamin therapy was independently associated with lower all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease and elevated HCY levels [26].
Healthy aging diets other than the Mediterranean: A focus on the Okinawan diet
2014, Mechanisms of Ageing and DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :Interestingly, folate and vitamin B6 help converts homocysteine into cysteine. Since high homocysteine levels have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia, it is noteworthy that serum homocysteine levels are particularly low in Okinawa (Alfthan et al., 1997) and cardiovascular mortality and dementia also follow this pattern (Ogura et al., 1995; Willcox et al., 2007). See Table 3.
Stable-isotope dilution LC-ESI-MS/MS techniques for the quantification of total homocysteine in human plasma
2009, Journal of Chromatography B: Analytical Technologies in the Biomedical and Life SciencesAssociation between a single nucleotide polymorphism in MTHFR gene and polycystic ovary syndrome
2009, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive BiologyCitation Excerpt :Moreover, homozygote state of MTHFR mutation leads to an elevated level of circulating Hcy [24]. A recent study has shown that there was a high association between Hcy and CVD in women with PCOS and a high Hcy level is related to the prevalence of CVD in PCOS women [25]. According to earlier studies, Koreans, along with Indian, Western European, and German populations, have shown association between the C677T in the MTHFR gene and male fertility [24,26,27].
Dietary intervention with Okinawan vegetables increased circulating endothelial progenitor cells in healthy young women
2009, AtherosclerosisCitation Excerpt :Several studies have shown that folic acid decreased homocysteine level and that fiber from vegetables was associated with lower homocysteine concentration [13]. Although the effects of homocysteine-lowering therapy with folic acid and vitamins on cardiovascular disease endpoints are still conflicting [14], epidemiological data suggested that there was an association between plasma homocysteine and cardiovascular disease mortality [15,16], and Okinawans have plasma homocysteine levels among the lowest in the world [16]. We showed here that dietary intervention with Okinawan vegetables for 2 weeks increased serum folic acid and decreased plasma homocysteine level.
