Focusing on the focus: What else beyond the master switches for polar cell growth?
2015, Molecular PlantCitation Excerpt :Diffuse growth is a more universal form of cell expansion and is found in almost all cell types in eukaryotic kingdoms. Although a large number of cell expansion undergo isotropic diffuse growth (the cell extension in all directions along the cell surface) (Kropf et al., 1998), here we consider and discuss anisotropic diffuse growth, the hallmark of plant cells, which describes the differential expansion of certain regions or positions of the cell. The molecular mechanism for the establishment and maintenance of cell polarity is one of the most fundamental and actively studied frontier areas in cell and developmental biology.
Morphogenesis of active shells
2012, BioSystemsCitation Excerpt :Rather, it is an overall growth of the cell surface area and volume comparable with that occurring in the ordinary proliferation cycle of leaf epidermal cells (Schwab et al., 2000). Active growth of the cell surface area is at the expense of insertion of new structural elements depending not only on accessibility of cellulose fibres but also on the cytoskeleton organization (Kropf et al., 1998; Mathur and Chua, 2000). However, since the insertion and subsequent ordering of cellulose fibres seems to be a process being at a slower scale than cytoskeleton rearrangements, one can assume that the formation of new surface is a rate-limiting component in the chain of events connecting molecular and shaping dynamics.
Proteomic and biochemical analysis of maize anthers after cold pretreatment and induction of androgenesis reveals an important role of anti-oxidative enzymes
2012, Journal of ProteomicsCitation Excerpt :The cytoskeleton is an important structural component of the cell, controlling the architecture of cell division. The actin coordinates the establishment of cell polarity and plane of cell division, positioning of organelles, and provides dynamic tracks for cytoplasmic streaming [38,39]. Actin 1, which was present in two spots with different pI, showed higher abundance during androgenic induction.
