Case Report
Patient A is a 47-year-old treatment-refractory heroin-dependent man who had been using heroin for 22 years at the time of intake. After he was fully informed and signed informed consent, he was the first patient to be included in a larger pilot study that was approved by the medical ethical board of the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (Protocol 09/322). The patient had been treated with all currently available evidence-based interventions, including four long-term inpatient treatments with a

The method Valencia-Alfonso et al., 2012 used in their study is highly recommended in the case of testing different contact points, which leads to the stimulation of different parts of NAc to stimulate the most successful brain region finally (Valencia-Alfonso et al., 2012). The dopaminergic neurons of the midbrain are the critical components in neuronal reward circuits (Hegarty et al., 2013).

2022, NeuromodulationCitation Excerpt :By definition, patients who remained abstinent after the operation did not continue to consume drugs; as expected, this was closely followed by an improvement in quality of life. Improvement in the pattern of drug use, which was also seen in relapsed patients, was classified as 1) reduction of average drug use16,28–30; 2) improvement on drug craving and quality of life scales37,38; and 3) longer periods of abstinence, from 12 to 20 months after surgery, followed by relapse.27 NAcc ablation studies also reported on postoperative psychopathological changes.
