Short CommunicationDissociation of motor symptoms during deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in the region of the internal capsule
Research Highlights
► STN DBS adjacent to the internal capsule was studied in a parkinsonian monkey. ► STN DBS improved rigidity but worsened akinesia and bradykinesia. ► STN DBS (80% motor threshold) significantly increased task performance time. ► Current spread to the internal capsule during STN DBS may dissociate motor symptoms.

Intraoperative changes in the H-reflex pathway during deep brain stimulation surgery for Parkinson's disease: A potential biomarker for optimal electrode placement
2020, Brain StimulationCitation Excerpt :It remains to be seen whether modulations of H-reflex recovery may be more dramatic if macrostimulation is carried out without prior MER, or alternatively if a longer interval is employed between MER and macrostimulation testing. Not unexpectedly, we observed that ‘suprathreshold’ macrostimulation of the STN and GPi produced typical involuntary motor responses as a side effect, almost certainly as a result of current spread to the internal capsule [31,32]. The dose-response curve observed here suggests suprathreshold macrostimulation leads to a pathological increase in H-reflex recovery that may relate to capsular effects on motor control.
