Rapid determination of bisacodyl in flow injection system combination by a novel sensitive adsorptive square-wave voltammetry
2009, Sensors and Actuators, B: ChemicalDisorders of fuel metabolism: Medical complications associated with starvation, eating disorders, dietary fads, and supplements
2005, Emergency Medicine Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :To facilitate the purging process some patients with eating disorders may abuse several types of laxatives, diuretics, or syrup of ipecac. Laxative abuse, which accounted for 7% to 15% of cases of diarrhea of undetermined etiology when patients were screened for laxatives [66,67], most commonly causes diarrhea but may cause abdominal cramping, pain with defecation, bloody stools, and if protracted, may lead to fluid and electrolyte disturbances and impair gastrointestinal motility [68]. Chronic abuse of two groups of stimulant laxatives, diphenolic (bisacodyl and phenolphthalein) and anthraquinones (danthron and senna) has been associated with cathartic colon, a state of abnormal colonic function and structure [69,70].
