The genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of tannery effluent in bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus)
2017, ChemosphereCitation Excerpt :DBP exposure implies high risks for humans, because it can easily migrate to human bodies through plastic food packs. The DBP is of potential hazard for human health, and its genotoxic effects have been identified in mice and rats (Douglas et al., 1986), fish (Benli et al., 2016), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Shahin and Von Borstel, 1977), Salmonella typhimurium (Lee and Lee, 2007), and humans (Lyche et al., 2009; Wittassek et al., 2011). Alam et al. (2010) have experimentally observed the genotoxic effect on Escherichia coli when the species was exposed to the tannery effluent extract used for irrigation in India.
A pioneering study on cytotoxicity in Australian parakeets (Melopsittacus undulates) exposed to tannery effluent
2017, ChemosphereCitation Excerpt :There is high risk of DBP exposure for humans; it can easily migrate into the human bodies through food plastic packs and be a potential hazard for human health. The genotoxic effects of this plasticizer have already been identified in Oreochromis niloticus (Benli et al., 2016); Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Shahin and Von Borstel, 1977), Salmonella typhimurium (Lee and Lee, 2007), as well as in human cells (Kleinsasser et al., 2001; Lyche et al., 2009). The analyses of the inorganic composition of the crude tannery effluent and of the water containing 5% diluted effluent have also indicated high concentrations of some highly-toxic chemical elements (Table 2).
