Bacterial infections IChlamydia trachomatis and non-gonococcal urethritis
Section snippets
Chlamydia trachomatis
C. trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted micro-organism in the developed world, causing genital, rectal and ocular disease. Serovars A–C cause trachoma; serovars D–K affect primarily the genital tract but can infect other mucosal surfaces including the conjunctiva, pharynx and rectum.1 Serovars L 1–3 cause lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV). LGV has recently emerged as an important cause of rectal disease in men who have sex with men (MSM). (See Lymphogranuloma venereum
Non-gonococcal urethritis (non-specific urethritis)
The terms non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and non-specific urethritis (NSU) describe a similar condition.19 For the purposes of this article, NGU refers only to urethritis in men, with symptoms and/or signs.
