Abstract
Abstract. Background: Adults with an anxiety disorder often report their parents’ caregiving style during childhood to have been emotionally cold and controlling. Research on the relations between anxiety disorders and current attachment organization in adulthood has so far been very sparse. Objective: This study investigated how adults with and without an anxiety disorder differ in their reported parental caregiving styles and their current adult attachment organization. Method: 26 adults with an anxiety disorder and 24 nonanxious controls (age range 20-56 years) were assessed with the Adult Attachment Prototype Rating (AAPR) and the German version of the EMBU (“My Memories of Childhood”). Results: Adults with an anxiety disorder reported less parental warmth and showed less current attachment security than did adults without an anxiety disorder. Conclusions: Findings suggest that emotional warmth of the parents during childhood may serve as a protective factor against the development of high attachment insecurity and anxiety later in life.
