Material and methods
All articles that were published between January 1990 and June 2001 (PubMed) were retrieved for “VBAC, uterine rupture,” “trial of labor, uterine rupture,” “cesarean delivery, uterine rupture,” and “scarred uterus, rupture” were reviewed by two investigators. Reports were excluded from analysis if the patient population contained <100 subjects, if uterine dehiscence and uterine rupture were commingled and indistinguishable, if the treatise was a commentary or review article, if the previous
Results
Of the 361 articles that were reviewed, 289 articles (80%) were excluded (113 articles had <100 TOLs, 58 articles had no mention of uterine rupture, 37 articles were commentaries or review articles, 16 articles were reports absent a denominator for TOL number, 11 articles were reports from the same hospital entity covering the same time period, and 54 articles were publications for other reasons (the references of the articles that were excluded are available from the corresponding author),
Comment
Uterine rupture as a consequence or correlate of TOL is a potentially catastrophic, life-threatening, and a morbid event for the mother and fetus. Based on an analysis of the combined recent literature reviewed in this report, it is now possible to estimate more accurately and succinctly the likelihood of secondary adverse outcomes if uterine rupture occurs. A specific knowledge of morbidity and death from uterine rupture permits better informed consent and could facilitate a more precise cost

2019, JOGNN - Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal NursingCitation Excerpt :We included results from a prospective cohort study to determine the probability of hysterectomy after uterine rupture, maternal death after planned repeat cesarean birth, and maternal death after a TOLAC (Landon et al., 2004). We derived the probability for maternal death after uterine rupture from a literature review of 72 primary research articles in which researchers assessed the outcomes for women who attempted vaginal birth after previous cesarean birth (Chauhan, Martin, Henrichs, Morrison, & Magann, 2003). Finally, we determined the probability of maternal death after hysterectomy following uterine rupture from a literature review that included cases of emergency postpartum hysterectomy (Rossi, Lee, & Chmait, 2010).
