Abstract

To the Editor:

A 30-year-old woman presented with a prolapsed, nonreducible anal mass of 3 weeks’ duration. It was associated with pain, episodes of rectal bleeding, and yellow discharge. Her past medical and surgical history was significant for morbid obesity, and she was status post tubal ligation. Physical examination revealed a 4.5 cm prolapsed, nonreducible mass at the 6:00 position of the anal verge. The base of the mass appeared to attach to the wall of the anal canal. A clinical diagnosis of a thrombosed external hemorrhoid was made, and she was scheduled for a hemorrhoidectomy in three weeks’ time. Intraoperative anoscopy and proctoscopy revealed no internal hemorrhoids. The postoperative course was uneventful.
